Pre-conference Heart Screening
On January 17, 2008, a heart screening event was hosted by the local area high school (Bishop Blanchet High School, Seattle, WA). The event which was sponsored by Parent Heart Watch (PHW), the Anthony Bates Foundation (ABF), Nick of Time Foundation (NOT), and others offered heart screenings to almost 300 young people. As a result of the screening, 26 young people (~10% of those tested) were given life saving news that they needed further heart evaluations.  One young girl was found to have a PDA (a serious hole in her heart) and was scheduled for immediate heart surgery to correct the problem found during our screening.  The results of this event reinforces the opinion that heart screenings will save lives.

Pre-conference Continuing Medical Education (CME)
On January 18, the University of Washington, Dr. Jonathan Drezner, and Parent Heart Watch hosted a CME conference titled "Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death in Young Athletes."  More than 125 cardiologists, sports medicine doctors, athletic trainers and medical professionals, and 80 Parent Heart Watch members from all over the world attended.  The keynote speakers included Dr. Domenica Corrado, Professor of Cardiology, Electrophysiology, University of Padua, Padua Italy who explained the Italian system that screens all athletes using ECG (EKG).  He presented data that showed a ~90% decrease in sudden cardiac deaths of young athletes as a result of the screenings.
The talk I found most interesting was given by Dr. Alan Maissel, Director, Coronary Care Unit of the University of California, San Diego.   The talk titled B-Type Natriuretic Peptide discussed the potential use of this blood test in screening patients (maybe athletes) for heart disease.   To learn more about the "Role of BNP in the Emergency-Care Setting", use the link below.
